Survivor Song: A Novel Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Such a disappointment : If you are a fan of Paul Tremblay considering this title based on the quality of his previous books, do yourself a favor and skip this one. So disappointing. The fast-acting rabies mutation provides a moderately novel spin on the “zombie apocalypse.”Unfortunately, the cause of the outbreak is the only new and/or interesting. component of the story. The plot follows two female protagonists from location to location during the outbreak. One is pregnant and has been bitten, the other is a doctor who abandons everything to help her pregnant friend. Despite many attempts at backstory and character development, including cute college roommate memories and a pregnancy diary app the mother uses to record increasingly scattered future messages to he unborn child; I was never able to relate to or like these main characters enough to invest in their outcome. Strangely enough, I did gravitate toward the two teenage movie buffs who helped the main characters on their journey and was disappointed when their part in the story ended so abruptly helped along by imagery stolen straight from The Walking Dead. In summary, I found this book to be a hodgepodge of unsuccessful character development, hackneyed stereotypes (ignorant, racist camouflage wearing militia men with trucks and guns anyone? ) disjointed action scenes and not-so-subtle political commentary. I wish I could get my time and money back. Hope you have the sense to save yours. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tracy Robinson -- Must Read! : “…I shouldn’t talk about fortnights, weeks, and time. It’s too much. Time is too heavy. It really does have weight you can feel but you can’t measure.” – Paul Tremblay, Survivor Song ( Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020 )
- from Bob Lewis -- TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : Timely and thrilling ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from W.Fenlon -- Well written but nothing special. : Before diving into this book, I heard a lot of talk that Paul Tremblay had basically predicted the future with Survivor Song, but for me, it was nothing more than any other story in this genre. Maybe that's what put me off first. Maybe my expectations were too high, because this didn't really work for me at all. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Gareth Osborne -- A little too prescient : What better, during a global pandemic, than reading a survival horror set during a global pandemic. Surely it couldn’t trigger massive amounts of anxiety, could it? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 29, 2020 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Thomas Joyce -- Thrilling and entertaining, and also incredibly moving : We’ll get it out of the way quickly, the elephant in the room. The book concerns a fast-spreading and deadly virus. But, of course, Tremblay wrote the book many months before Covid-19 cast its long, horrible shadow over the world. And the virus at the centre of Survivor Song is actually a mutated version of the rabies virus, with a terribly short incubation period and devastating effects on the human body. Those infected quickly become aggressive and violent towards any living being nearby. But these are not zombies; they don’t shamble after others and yearn for brains. They only want to bite and pass on the virus, causing it to spread as quickly as possible. As the rabies virus attacks the human brain, the only way to stop the infected is to kill the brain … okay, maybe they are a little zombie-like. But Romero’s monsters never spouted snippets of poetic, fairy tale-like passages while pursuing Barbara. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 21, 2020 )
